William Gareth Davies (born 29 September 1955) is a former Wales and British and Irish Lions international rugby union player.[1] He was a player on the 1980 British Lions tour to South Africa and played club rugby for Cardiff RFC for 12 years, gaining 21 Welsh caps, captaining them five times, and winning a Triple Crown. He represented Oxford in the 1977 Varsity Match.

An all-round sportsman, he also represented Welsh schools at cricket and played for Glamorgan's second eleven.

Davies is a chemistry graduate from the former University of Wales, Cardiff and studied for his teaching qualifications at Oxford University.[2]

Dean of the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education

In January 2009 Davies was appointed as Dean of the Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education at Leeds Metropolitan University.[3] He previously worked for the Welsh Assembly Government in Sydney, Australia. Other past roles have included being BBC Wales head of sport, chief executive of Cardiff Athletic Club/Cardiff Rugby Football Club and assistant director of CBI Wales.

A former chairman of the Sports Council for Wales, Davies oversaw a national campaign to encourage primary school children to take up sport. He has also been the director of Welsh Affairs for the Royal Mail and commissioning editor for sports and events at Welsh TV company S4C.
